Best regardsWhen to use this template
- Documenting a new monitoring alert with what it detects, what action to take, and who to escalate to.
- Alert tuning ticket when an alert is too noisy or too quiet. Captures the change rationale so it doesn't get reverted.
- Escalation policy for an alert specifying who pages whom and at what time-thresholds.
Customize for your workflow
- Always include the runbook link. Alerts without runbooks become alerts that get ignored when the original responder leaves.
- Keep alert descriptions actionable. 'Database CPU > 80%' is incomplete; 'Database CPU > 80% for 10 minutes — check for runaway queries via X' is useful.
Common questions
What's the bar for adding a new alert?
Clear action when it fires AND symptoms a human can't otherwise easily detect. Alerts that fire and you ignore are alerts that should be deleted.
How do I reduce alert fatigue?
Audit quarterly. Any alert that fires often without action gets deleted or tuned. Any alert never fires gets reviewed for whether it's still relevant.
