[Additional context or considerations]When to use this template
- Creating a runbook for a recurring infrastructure task (database backup verification, certificate rotation, restoring service after failover).
- Updating a runbook when the underlying system changes. Versioned so the on-call engineer at 2am sees the current procedure.
- Cross-team runbook for procedures that involve coordination (a database engineer doing maintenance on a system that affects an application team).
Customize for your workflow
- Include the 'how to verify success' step. Runbooks that don't tell you whether the procedure worked are useless under stress.
- Add 'what to do if step X fails' branches for the high-risk steps. On-call engineers facing a broken procedure need a path forward.
Common questions
How detailed should runbooks be?
Detailed enough that someone unfamiliar with the system could execute the procedure correctly. Don't assume context from people doing this at 3am.
Where should runbooks live?
Linked from the alert. The path from 'page received' to 'runbook open' should be one click. Anything more and they'll be ignored.
