Best regardsWhen to use this template
- Briefing a designer or agency on a new project. Same template each time so quality of output is consistent across vendors.
- Internal brief for in-house design team capturing audience, goals, constraints, deliverables, and timeline.
- Client-facing brief that doubles as scope documentation, signed off before work begins.
Customize for your workflow
- Always include reference examples — 'we like the look of X' visuals work better than long verbal descriptions.
- State what success looks like. 'Customers click the CTA' is measurable; 'looks good' is not.
Common questions
How long should a creative brief be?
Two pages typically. Long briefs get skimmed; short ones miss critical detail. Aim for everything important fitting on a single screen.
Should I show references from competitors?
Sparingly. Useful as 'we don't want this' or 'similar audience but different category' rather than 'copy this'. Direct copy is creative malpractice.
