BestWhen to use this template
- Connection request to a target prospect. Reference something specific from their profile or recent activity to avoid the auto-decline pile.
- First message after a connection accepts. Don't pitch immediately — most replies come from value-add openers.
- InMail to a prospect outside your network. Has to do more work than email since LinkedIn caps the length and the inbox volume is lower.
Customize for your workflow
- LinkedIn limits connection requests to 300 characters. Test your snippet at that length before saving.
- Keep a separate 'just connecting, no pitch' snippet. Some prospects respond better to relationship-first; save the pitch for week 2.
Common questions
Should I include a pitch in the connection request itself?
No. Auto-declines spike. Connection request is for getting in the door; the pitch goes in message 2 after they've accepted.
How many follow-ups on LinkedIn before backing off?
Two messages, separated by 5-7 days. After that you're on the edge of being marked as spam. Switch to email or move on.
