TypeFire for Mac

The complete version history for the TypeFire Mac app, newest first. TypeFire is a free text expander , clipboard manager and markdown notes app for macOS: it expands abbreviations into full text in any Mac app, keeps everything you copy, searches the text inside your screenshots, and opens the markdown vault you already have. Runs of maintenance versions are grouped so the feature releases stay readable.

Notes

  • Pin the tab list. The tab search has a pin button. Pinned, it becomes a full-height list on the right that stays open while you work, in focus mode too. Drag its edge to resize it. The tab count turns orange while it's pinned; click it to unpin.
  • Reorder tabs by dragging in the tab list, pinned or not. The tab bar follows.

Settings

  • Reset Accessibility. If expansion stops working after an update while the Accessibility switch still shows on, Reset (in Settings, General, and in the permission dialog) clears TypeFire's entry so macOS asks again.

Fixed

  • Duplicating the same snippet twice works, and makes "(copy 2)".
  • When a snippet can't be moved, favorited or duplicated, the list says why.

AI apps (MCP)

  • Your AI apps can now use TypeFire. Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, VS Code (GitHub Copilot agent mode), LM Studio and Windsurf can search, read and save your notes and snippets, and your clipboard history if you turn that on.
  • Connect in one click. Settings, AI apps (MCP) lists the AI apps on your Mac, each with a Connect button. The last onboarding screen has the same card. Any other app that supports MCP can be set up by hand.
  • Every vault. Search, list and read notes (a whole note or one section), follow links and backlinks, create notes with tags, edit, rename or move them, add to today's daily note, and delete to the Trash.
  • The note you have open. Ask "summarize this note" and the AI reads the one open in TypeFire. It can change exact words in it without rewriting the rest.
  • Open it in TypeFire. An AI app can bring TypeFire forward with a note open, as a tab or in its own window, or show you a snippet or a clip. A note it edits while it's in a temporary tab becomes a kept tab.
  • Search the way you do. AI apps use TypeFire's search operators, list notes by date or property, and, with Weave on (Apple silicon), find notes by meaning.
  • Snippets too. Search, read, and create or edit any kind of snippet, Selection Prompts and chains included.
  • You stay in control. One switch for all AI apps, one each for Notes, Snippets and Clipboard history, and Read only. An AI can't overwrite a change you just made, and anything it deletes goes to the Trash.
  • Free and Pro. Searching, reading and opening are free. Creating, editing, moving and deleting from an AI app need Pro or the trial.
  • Local. The connection stays on your Mac. If TypeFire is quit, the first request starts it in the menu bar.

AI in snippets and Selection Prompts

  • The latest models. Claude Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 4.5, Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1; GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and GPT-6 Astra; Gemini 3.8 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.1 Pro.
  • Fast by default. Each provider now starts on its fast model, the best fit for snippets and Selection Prompts. You can pick any other model in Settings, AI.
  • Faster answers. AI snippets and Selection Prompts come back noticeably quicker, especially on Claude.
  • One Model menu. Settings, AI is now a single menu with every model grouped by provider, each with a short note like "Fast, best for snippets". Picking a model picks its provider. The provider cards keep the keys and the Test button.
  • Switch after a test. When a key tests green for a provider you aren't using, TypeFire asks whether to use it.

Notes and the editor

  • Five editor settings in Settings, Notes: Highlight the current line, Check spelling (underline only, no autocorrect), Auto pair brackets, Indentation guides and Fold headings.
  • Dim, a fourth color next to Standard, Warm and Cool: soft graphite in dark mode and gray paper in light. It's in the theme menu and Settings, Appearance, and the Spotlight windows and Quick Look follow it.
  • A calmer dark mode for long sessions. The current line is a quiet gray band, body text is a little softer, headings are a weight lighter, and <placeholders> in prose are no longer red.
  • Bigger checkboxes, centered on the text, with a little more room on each task line, drawn in your theme's colors in every color and mode.
  • Focus mode holds while Markdown files arrive from Finder and as you move between notes and files, and it has its own shortcut in Settings, Shortcuts.
  • The note menu is grouped, with the three copy actions under one Copy.
  • Renaming a note keeps #heading and #^block links pointing at it.

Tabs and Markdown files

  • Sort your tabs once. The tab search has Recent, A to Z, Vault and Folder. Each reorders the tabs once, with Undo; nothing stays sorted.
  • Close all, with Undo, in the same place.
  • ⌘O and File, Open follow Settings, Markdown, now called Open Markdown files: a tab by default, like a Finder double-click.
  • Many files from Finder open as tabs much faster.

Snippets and Notes

  • Select several at once. Tick rows, ⇧-click for a range or press ⌘A, then move, tag, favorite or delete them from the bar.
  • Deleted snippets go to the Trash. An empty new note is cleaned up when you leave it.
  • Search finds a snippet by its abbreviation, after title matches.
  • The world buttons show their names when the sidebar has room.

Also new

  • Help has a new chapter, AI apps (MCP), with its own video tutorial.
  • License, purchase and trial screens are now in every language.
  • Appearance set to System now stays System after a restart.
  • In a table, the cell you move to with the arrow keys stays on screen.

Notes

  • Notes open in tabs. Every vault and every Markdown file you open share one tab bar, and your tabs come back when you reopen the app
  • A click previews a note in a reused tab. Typing or a double-click keeps it, and ⌘-click opens a new tab
  • Tab tools: ⌘T for a new note in a new tab, drag to reorder, tab search with recently closed tabs, ⌘⇧T to reopen the last one, and a hover card with the note's vault, collection and dates
  • Markdown files from Finder open as tabs, or in their own window, your choice in Settings, Markdown. A file window can move back into a tab
  • A back arrow and ⌘[ take you back through the links you followed
  • Focus mode keeps the tab bar, with a toggle to hide it
  • The formatting toolbar lights up whatever is under the cursor
  • Checkboxes in tables: type [ ] or [x] in a cell
  • Every tab shortcut is listed under Help, Shortcuts

AI

  • Custom AI on a note: write your own instruction and run it on the selection or the whole note
  • Selection Prompts work inside notes. The answer replaces your selection, and one ⌘Z undoes it

Quick Look

  • A new Finder preview for Markdown files. It opens page-shaped with a TypeFire Preview bar showing where the note lives, its dates, word count, reading time and task progress, and it follows your TypeFire theme
  • A full-width option in Settings, Markdown

Other

  • Pro counts a Mac the first time it uses a Pro feature, not when you sign in. When your places are full, the app lists your devices so you can free one
  • The menu bar icon opens All for new users
  • Using a clip no longer moves it to the top of Clips
  • Selection Prompts show their shortcut in the snippet list
  • "Expand snippets while writing notes" now turns expansion off inside notes when you switch it off

Fixed

  • Undo right after switching notes could put the previous note's text into the one on screen
  • Switching notes quickly could write one note's text into another
  • A fill-in or AI snippet typed inside TypeFire now lands there, not in the last app you used
  • Expansions in Safari and Safari web apps land reliably

TypeFire is a free text expander, clipboard manager and markdown notes app for macOS, and every version is listed on this page newest first.

TypeFire updates itself. Open the app, click the TypeFire icon in your menu bar, and choose Check for Updates; the new version installs in about a minute and your snippets, collections and clips are untouched.

If your Mac is managed by an employer and its policy blocks an app from replacing itself, download the current version from typefire.app instead and drag it to Applications over the old copy.

Older builds are not offered for download. An old version misses later fixes and compatibility work, and it will not match the current sign-in and license system, so installing one causes more problems than it solves.

The current version is always the supported one, and updating never removes snippets or clips you already have.

Yes. The Chrome extension and the macOS app are separate products on separate release schedules.

Chrome updates the extension automatically in the background, so there is nothing to install. The extension is free in full with no paid tier, and it expands your abbreviations on any website.

TypeFire 4.0 added Notes, a third world alongside snippets and clips.

You point it at a folder of markdown you already have, including an existing Obsidian vault, and it reads and edits those files in place with no import and no proprietary format. It brings a live markdown editor that formats as you type while the file stays plain markdown, wikilinks and backlinks across the vault, quick capture and daily notes on their own hotkeys, task lists, highlight and markdown tables, and AI actions on a note. ⌘⌃3 puts the whole vault behind a global hotkey in any application.

The release also added iCloud sync with a separate switch for snippets, clips and notes, note version history, a per-app capture blocklist for the clipboard manager, and screenshots saved as files appearing in Clips searchable by the words inside them. Notes itself is free; notes sync and note version history are Pro.

TypeFire 3.0 was the largest release so far. It introduced Clyp, a clipboard manager that keeps everything you copy and searches the text inside screenshots on device; Selection Prompts, which rewrite highlighted text in place in any Mac app; Prompt Chains, which run several prompts in sequence from one trigger; Markdown Quick Look in Finder; and two-way iCloud sync for snippets.
