Notes in Chrome

Markdown notes in Chrome, in a folder you own.

TypeFire's Chrome extension edits a folder of Markdown files on your disk, an Obsidian vault included, in the same live preview editor as the Mac app. Wikilinks, backlinks, tabs, a graph, daily notes, quick capture from any page, and a Spotlight that finds a note wherever you are typing. Files stay plain Markdown; nothing is rewritten that you did not type. Free.

A folder on your disk

Chrome's own folder dialog opens it. Choose Allow on every visit and it stays open.

Links, backlinks, a graph

The connections between your notes, drawn without any model or download.

Found from any page

Open the Spotlight, type a few letters, and the note's text goes where you were typing.

The editor

The Mac app's editor, running in a tab.

Live preview as you type: wikilinks with [[double brackets]], backlinks, tables edited in place, images, callouts, code blocks with a language, footnotes, tags, an outline, pinned notes, find and replace. Several vaults with a switcher, and a note in its own tab that follows the app's theme live.

  • Wikilinks and backlinks

Type [[ and pick a note. Every note lists what links to it.

  • Tables, callouts, code

Edited in place, rendered as you type, saved as plain Markdown.

  • Tabs, like a browser

Keep several notes open, pin the tab list as a sidebar, and drag tabs into any order.

  • Version history

Every save keeps a snapshot you can roll back to. Pro.

From any page

Capture from anywhere, find from anywhere.

Quick capture puts a thought into your vault without leaving the page. Daily notes open today's note in one keystroke. The Spotlight searches notes, snippets and clips from one box on any page, and Enter inserts a note's text where you were typing; a {{note:Title}} token does the same inside a snippet, always current.

  • The Spotlight

One shortcut over any page searches your notes, snippets and clips. Search operators in every box.

  • A note inside a snippet

{{note:Standup}} expands to the note's current text.

    {{note:Standup}}
  • The same folder on the Mac

Same sign-in, same notes folder. The Mac app adds Quick Look, Weave and sync across Macs.

Questions

What it does, what it costs, where your data goes.

Still not answered?

Yes. TypeFire opens any folder of Markdown files, an Obsidian vault included, through Chrome's own folder dialog, and edits the files in place with wikilinks, backlinks, tables, images, callouts, tags, daily notes and a graph.

Files stay plain Markdown, and nothing is rewritten that you did not type.

In the folder you picked on your own disk. TypeFire reads and writes only that folder, through the browser's folder permission; nothing in it is sent anywhere.

Choose Allow on every visit in the dialog and the folder stays open between sessions.

Yes. The extension runs in Chrome 114 or newer, Edge or Brave, on Windows, Linux and macOS.

On a Chromebook, snippets and clips work. The Mac app opens the same folder natively.

Notes are free in full, including the graph, several vaults and quick capture.

Pro is one $18 purchase for the Mac app and the extension together, and in the browser it adds note version history, Selection Prompts, Prompt Chains and the Mac's synced clips.

There is no account holding your notes and no server between you and them.

The notes are files in a folder you chose; TypeFire is the editor. Close the extension and the folder is exactly where it was, readable by anything.
