Daily Notes That Match the Convention You Already Use

Daily notes are the most reliable note-taking habit there is, and the easiest to break by accident.

The failure is almost never motivation. It is that two tools disagreed about what today's note is called, so you ended up with two.

The convention is the whole feature

A daily note is just a file named after a date. Everything else is preference.

What matters is that every tool touching your vault agrees on the name. If Obsidian creates 2026-08-18.md in Journal/ and something else creates 18 Aug 2026.md in the root, you now have two journals and neither is complete.

Use YYYY-MM-DD

Three reasons, and they are practical rather than aesthetic:

• It sorts correctly as text. In Finder, in a terminal, in any app, with no date parsing at all.
• It is unambiguous. 03/04/2026 is two different days depending on where you are.
• Everything supports it. It is the default in almost every app.

If your existing vault uses something else, keep it. Consistency beats correctness here.

What actually goes in one

The mistake is treating it as a diary. A daily note is better as an inbox with a date on it.

What earns its place:

• Things you were told and will forget
• Decisions, and why
• Half-thoughts, unprocessed
• Links to notes you touched today

What does not: anything that deserves to be its own note. Write it separately and link it.

Templates: less is more

A daily note template with eight headings produces eight empty headings every day, and the guilt of unfilled structure is a reliable way to stop.

Start with nothing. Add a heading only when you notice you keep writing it by hand.

Making sure you only ever have one

If more than one app writes to your vault:

1. Match the date format exactly, including separators.
2. Match the folder, including whether there is one.
3. Check on the first day of a month, when zero-padding bugs surface.

If you have already got two

Merge by date rather than by app: for each date with two files, concatenate them into the one whose name matches your chosen convention, then delete the other. Do it in a copy of the vault first.

Then fix the convention mismatch, or it happens again next week.

The habit, honestly

Daily notes work because there is no decision about where a thought goes. That is their whole advantage, and every piece of structure you add erodes it.
