You do not have to pay for clipboard history on a Mac. Several free options are good, and two of them are better than some paid apps at the specific thing most people want.

Here is what each actually does.

Free Clipboard Managers for Mac, Honestly Compared

The free options

Maccy is the default recommendation. Free, open source, unlimited history, genuinely fast search, actively maintained. It does one job deliberately. If your requirement is "remember what I copied and let me find it", stop here.

Clipy is lighter and adds snippet folders you pick from a menu. It has no search, which becomes the limiting factor once history is more than a screen deep.

Flycut is a Jumpcut fork built for developers. Text only, by design: copy a screenshot and it is not there. That restraint is why people like it.

CopyQ is the most capable of the free set, with extensive command scripting and cross-platform support. It is a Qt app, so it does not feel like a Mac app, and its power costs configuration time.

CopyClip is a simple menu bar history from the App Store, with a paid tier for more. Easiest to start with, least capable at depth.

What free does not get you

Across all five, three things are consistently missing.

Text inside images. None of them read the words in a screenshot. Copy an error message as an image and it is effectively invisible to search forever. This is the biggest gap in the free tier of the whole category.

Encrypted storage. Your clipboard passes through bank details, addresses and occasionally passwords. Most free managers store history in plain files. Whether that matters depends on who else can reach your machine.

Anything permanent. All five are rolling histories. None can turn the paragraph you paste weekly into an abbreviation you type, because none has a snippet engine.

When free is genuinely enough

Be honest about your usage. If you:

  • mostly copy text rather than images
  • want the last hour rather than the last month
  • are comfortable with a rolling history

then Maccy is a better fit than anything paid, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

When it stops being enough

Free stops working when:

  • you copy screenshots and later need to find one by its contents
  • you retype the same text weekly, which is a text expander problem a longer history cannot solve
  • you want history encrypted rather than sitting in plain files
  • you are hunting the same item repeatedly, meaning it should have graduated to a snippet

Where TypeFire sits

Being straight about the trade: TypeFire's free clipboard tier keeps your 10 most recent clips, which is fewer than any app above. On raw clip count, Maccy wins.

What the free tier adds is search inside screenshots using on-device text recognition, AI actions on any clip, encrypted storage, and an uncapped text expander in the same app. $18 once removes the clip cap.

So the choice is roughly: unlimited free history and nothing else, or a short free history with the parts free apps skip. Neither is wrong.
