How to See Clipboard History on Mac (2026)

The short answer: macOS does not keep clipboard history. It holds exactly one item, and copying something new replaces it permanently. There is no keyboard shortcut that brings the old one back, no hidden panel, and no Terminal command that recovers it.

That is the whole of the built-in story. Everything below is either what macOS genuinely offers, or how to get real history.

What macOS actually gives you

Open Finder, click the Edit menu, and choose Show Clipboard.

That opens a small window showing what is on your clipboard right now. It is a viewer, not a history. Close it, copy something else, and the previous item is gone for good.

It is genuinely useful for one thing: checking whether you copied what you thought you copied, particularly with formatted text or images.

Why there is no history

The clipboard is a single system pasteboard that every app reads from and writes to. Apple has never shipped a history UI for it on macOS, though iOS and iPadOS have Universal Clipboard for handing the current item between devices.

Windows added a clipboard history in 2018, on Win + V. macOS has no equivalent, which is why the Mac clipboard manager category exists at all.

How to get real clipboard history

You install a clipboard manager. It watches the pasteboard, saves each item, and gives you a searchable history behind a keyboard shortcut.

Good free options exist:

What to look for

Search, not a menu. A history you scroll is fine at ten items and useless at five hundred.

Whether it keeps images. Most do. Far fewer let you search them, which matters more than it sounds: a screenshot in your history is effectively invisible unless the app reads the text inside it.

Where it stores things. Your clipboard passes through bank details, addresses and occasionally passwords. Prefer an app that stores history encrypted on your machine and never uploads it. Good ones also respect the marker password managers put on what they copy, so those entries are never recorded at all.

Retention you control. Keep by age, by count, or by disk budget, and be able to clear it instantly.

The thing worth knowing

Clipboard history is recency-biased. In practice you want the thing you copied four minutes ago, not four weeks ago. People install unlimited history and then use the last twenty items forever.

The genuinely repeated things, your address, a canned reply, a code block, are better handled by a text expander: give it an abbreviation, type three characters, get the whole thing. No searching at all.
