Using Clips

Pro

Clips remembers what you copy, keeps it on disk, encrypted, and lets you find it again.

Turning it on

Clips does not start when you buy Pro. The first time you unlock Pro you get a one-time splash explaining what it does, with an explicit Enable button. Turning on something that watches your clipboard should be a deliberate choice. If you dismiss it, you can enable Clips later in Settings → Clips.

Once enabled, Clips takes its place in the switcher at the top of the sidebar, beside Snippets and Notes. 1, 2 and 3 switch between them.

What it captures

Finding things

• Search the sidebar box, or press ⌘F. Searches previews, OCR text, names and source app.
• Quick lists in the sidebar: All, Pinned, Text, Images, Screenshots, Files, Colors, URLs, each with a live count. Images and Screenshots do not overlap, so the counts add up rather than double-counting the same clip. Screenshots are recognized as you take them, so the list fills from the moment you enable Clips rather than covering older clips.
• Source apps section: everything you copied from Chrome, or Figma, or Slack.
• Filter in the toolbar for size, image resolution, date range, copy count and tags.
• Group by none, date, type, source app or collection.
• Sort newest, oldest, largest, most copied.
• Two views: a thumbnail grid, or a dense list with columns. Grid has three thumbnail sizes.

Working with a clip

Select a clip and the inspector on the right shows everything about it.

Action	What it does
Copy	Puts it back on the clipboard. The main action in the inspector.
Insert	Pastes straight into the app you were last in, and what Enter does. Needs to know which app that is, so it is most reliable from Quick Paste and the search overlay.
Insert as plain text	Strips formatting on the way out.
Copy file path	For images and files: copies the path instead of the contents.
Open	URLs open in your browser; files and images open in their app.
Pin	Exempt from all auto-deletion. Starred in the grid.
Name	Rename a clip so you can find it later. Searchable.
Tags	Free-form labels. Tags appear in the sidebar.
Remind in 1h	A notification that brings the clip back later.
Extract text	Runs OCR on an image, on device.
Save as snippet	Promotes a clip into a real TypeFire snippet. Asks for a name first, prefilled from the clip, and the clip's contents become the snippet body.
Copy text as	UPPERCASE, lowercase, Sentence case, Title Case.

Quick Paste

Press ⌘⌃2 anywhere to get your recent clips. Type to filter, arrow keys to move, Enter to paste, Esc to dismiss. You never leave the app you are typing in.

A mouse click on a clip pastes it too, unless you change that: Settings → Clips, at the top, can make a click open the clip in TypeFire instead, with its inspector on it. Enter always pastes. The paste lands in the app that was in front when you pressed the shortcut, and that includes TypeFire's own note editor and Markdown window.

The overlay is one of the four Spotlight tabs: the pill above it moves between All, Snippets, Clips and Notes, so whichever one you reach for, the others are one click away. Switching keeps the overlay where it is, and the app mark beside the pill opens the main window.

Hover any clip for a … button, or press ⌘K, to get its actions: copy, paste as plain text, open, copy file path, pin. The type filter in the header narrows to text, images, screenshots, links, colors, files or pinned.

Keyboard and mouse

• Arrow keys move the selection in both views and scroll it into sight.
• Right-click any clip for the full action menu.
• Hover a card for preview, pin and delete. Hold the delete icon for 0.7 seconds to delete without a confirmation dialog; a single click asks first.
• Double-click any clip to open it full-window, images and long text alike. Esc closes it.
• In an image preview: zoom with the buttons or by scrolling, drag to pan once you are past 100%, double-click to toggle, and Reset to fit again. The action bar along the bottom repeats Copy, Insert, Open and Pin.

Screenshots and watched folders

Settings → Clips can auto-import new screenshots, and watch any folder you choose so files dropped there become clips. Both are off by default.

How long clips are kept

Four modes in Settings → Clips, under Auto-delete:

Mode	Behavior
By number of clips (default)	Keep the newest 500. Oldest drop off.
By age	Delete anything older than N days, 30 by default.
By storage size	Keep the newest clips that fit a disk budget, 500 MB by default, with an MB/GB/TB picker.
Never	Keep everything until you delete it.

Pinned clips are exempt from all of them. Settings → Clips also has Delete all clips and Delete all except pinned, both of which ask for confirmation.
